- Bark, wood chips, sawdust
- Cakes, cookies, candy
- Coffee grounds and filters, tea bags
- Dairy products, egg shells
- Feathers, hair
- Flowers, plants, weed herbs, roots, yard waste
- Fruit and vegetable trimmings
- Leaves, peat moss, garden soil
- Leftovers and out-of-date food
- Litter, feces of domestic animals
- Meat and fish leftovers
- Paper packaging for food products (bags, boxes, bins)
- Pasta, bread, cereals
- Used paper towels and handkerchiefs
Things that do NOT go in the brown bin
- Absorbent pads used in meat packaging
- Cut grass
- Dryer lint
- Fabric softener sheets
- Fireplace or barbecue ashes
- Litter used to absorb oil
- Non OXO biodegradable plastic bags
- Plastic packaging, containers or platters
- Regular plastic bags (e.g. used for milk, groceries, garbage)
- Styrofoam
- Vacuum bags and their contents
